MSU LADY BEARS HAND LADY PIRATES 73-54 DEFEAT

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State University Lady Bears upended Hampton University 73-54 here on Monday night, handing the Lady Pirates their second consecutive loss and their fourth loss in their last eight outings.
Monday’s loss dropped HU’s record to 14-12 overall and 7-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, while the MSU Lady Bears improved to 18-9 overall and 10-4 in MEAC play.
MSU led at halftime, 31-26.
“We did not protect the ball at all throughout the game and we just digged ourselves into a hole that we could not get out of,” said HU head coach Walter Mebane. “We also had 33 turnovers and that is unusual for us and that is just not the way that we play basketball.”
In the opening half of play, the game seemed like it would evolve into anything but a blowout for either team as the teams traded jabs, HU leading by as many as seven points at one stage, at 21-14, and MSU leading by as many as six points at 30-24. There were five ties and four lead changes in the first half.
As close as the first half was, the second half was a totally different story. In less than two minutes of play in the final period, MSU’s lead had stretched to double-digits when Theresa Davis’ jumper gave her team a 37-27 advantage with 18:09 to play. Just over four minutes later, that lead had stretched to 16 points, at 45-29, and the rout was on for the Lady Bears.
Thanks to 33 turnovers in the contest, HU could never mount a serious threat and that allowed the Lady Bears to lead comfortably throughout the second half. When Corin Adams scored on a layup at the 2:40 mark, MSU enjoyed its largest lead of the contest at 22 points, 69-47. That margin was matched in the closing minute of play.
For the game, two players scored in double-figures for Hampton, including Rachel Butler, 17 points, and Artavia Burns, who netted 13 points. Butler also led the team in rebounding with eight boards on the night.
Morgan State was led by Adams, who scored a game-high 20 points, and Theresa Davis, who added 14. Britney Griffin led all rebounders with nine boards.
The Lady Pirates will now close out the regular-season with consecutive home games at the HU Convocation Center against Norfolk State University (March 1, 4 p.m.), North Carolina A&T State University (March 3, 6 p.m.) and Howard University (March 7, 6 p.m.).
